To Whom Do We Pray?

Every prayer here rises to the same place: to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Some of these prayers we speak to him directly. Others we pray alongside Our Lady and the saints, asking them to carry our intentions with us, the way we might ask a trusted friend to pray for us in a hard hour.

We never pray to the saints in place of God. We ask those who are already home in his love, fully alive in Christ, to add their voices to ours. Scripture tells us that such prayer has power: the continual prayer of a just man availeth much. The saints are not distant from us. They are the great company who ran the race before us, and they have not stopped loving us. When we pray with them, we are never praying alone.

James 5:16
